VSG Weight Loss Surgery Update

Hi everyone! I know it has been awhile but I have been busy working on everything I need to do to get my approval for weight loss surgery. Earlier this month, I went to the Bariatric Seminar (the second one I’ve been to) and received information about the surgery and the steps I needed to achieve to get an approval from my insurance company, which is Tricare Prime. A week later, I went and had my first consultation with the surgeon. A lot of the tests I needed for my insurance company were completed a few weeks prior so I brought that information along with me (EKG, endoscopy results, chest x-rays, and recent lab results). The only things I needed in order to submit a request for approval from my insurance company was an Upper GI test, Psychological Evaluation, and a Nutrition Consultation. I had my upper GI done a couple of weeks ago and my psych eval, which I passed, a couple of days ago. I am currently waiting on an appointment with the nutritionist and the soonest appointment she has is a month away. I am aggravated that it is so far away because it is the last thing I need to complete for a surgery date (pending approval) but what can I say? They are a busy office; however, I will be calling and checking for cancellations on a regular basis. Why I’m Considering VSG

Some of you have been following my blog for over a year and have watched me lose 25lbs and 36 inches only to see me gain 30lbs over the course of 6 months. I am considering bariatric surgery…Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (VSG) in particular. The reason why I am considering VSG is mainly because of the past couple of months, I have been experiencing some health issues and that is a huge no-no for me because I have two small kids I have to be here for. Let me back up. First and foremost I have dieted and made lifestyle changes, lost weight, then found it and it brought new friends. To add to that, I am an emotional eater. I eat when I’m happy, when I’m sad, when I’m celebrating, when I’m depressed, when I want to have a good time, etc. That has been something that has been difficult to break since childhood so I know that VSG can help with that. VSG is not an easy way out because I have to go through surgery as well as recovery as well as lifestyle changes, and thankfully with my stomach being half the size I can only eat so much, which will help with the emotional eating and overeating. I did not want to do the gastric bypass because I am not comfortable with having to take supplements for the rest of my life because my body no longer gets nutrients from my food or the other longterm side effects of it….but back to the health problems.

Over the past couple of months, I have had some crazy things going on with my body. Mind you I still get in my veggies and attend zumba as well as walk weekly. The arising health issues have been a wake up call because of family history. There is diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and female cancers (Uterus & Breast) on BOTH sides of my family. Thank God I don’t have any of those issues now but with a BMI of 48 who knows what will come. I want to be healthy and available for my children. My strongest prayer to God after keeping my family safe is for me to at least (praying for many more years though but at least) live long enough to raise my children. On top of that I am tired of squeezing into spanx almost everyday, I’m tired of my knees hurting when I walk up the stairs. I’m tired of not being happy with what I see when I look in the mirror. I’m tired of losing weight only to gain back even more weight, and I’m tired of limited shopping. Someone took a picture of me on my bad side (you know we all have our good side big or small) and I saw how big I’ve gotten and I was devastated. When you take your own photos you can disguise it how you like and be in denial but when you see what someone else sees it’s like ๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿ˜ฎ๐Ÿ˜ซ!

I’m choosing this for me first and my children second. They deserve a healthy, active mother. I want to be an example for my daughter because I NEVER want her to deal with obesity. I’ve prayed about it and I have peace with my decision.ย I am starting an Instagram page to document this journey as well as a VLOG on YouTube so those who are considering this process can share in this journey with me. I’m still coming up with a name but as soon as it’s up and going I will update you guys. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdttDd0lzzrYcsDETn-Eocwย Is my current YouTube channel and it may change so I will Update you accordingly. I am prepared for the negativity and even more prepared for the positivity and good vibes. Like I always say I go through nothing for myself but only to help someone else. Agape and God’s speed.

Welcome Home Soldier!

I have been MIA for awhile because…MY SOLDIER IS HOME!!! He was deployed for 9 months to Iraq and we have been reintegrating and connecting for the past 2 weeks and I’m loving every minute of having him home! As some of you know, I originally started this blog to track my weight release journey during this deployment. Well, deployment is over and stats are in. I released a total of 24 pounds and 37 inches. My inches were significant and I’m happy about the pounds as well. Just because my husband is home doesn’t mean my journey is over. It is definitely continuing with him by my side. We are going on vacation in a months time so my next goal is 15 more pounds released by vacation.

I have discovered that my limit with a green juice or smoothie cleanse is 3 days. After day 3 I’m like “GIVE ME FOOD ๐Ÿ˜ฉ”, so I am learning ways to continue my cleanse without breaking the fast and going crazy after 3 days. I am loving cinnamon sprinkled apples with melted peanut butter as a snack and I’m excited about trying cauliflower pizza! Help your girl out and comment your favorite healthy snacks and foods below!

Last Minute Victory

Hi everyone! So as you know I started this blog to track my weight loss journey while my husband is deployed. Well it’s almost time for him to come home and I’m on the final countdown to get off as much weight as I can for his homecoming. I have been flirting with the same weight since November (a 15-20lb weight loss) but I know my body fat composition has changed tremendously because I’ve lost several as in over 40 inches. I have a waistline again and curves (without the body shaped or spanx ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿพ). I attempted the smoothie cleanse again but I fell off again so this time my nutritionist recommended juicing so I’m on a modified juice fast with snacks in between to fuel my workouts. This starts day 3 for me and I’m on this fast for 10 or more days. I’m going to complete it on the simple motivation that I’m just about out of time. For some reason I’m a procrastinator who works better under pressure. I’ve read lots of blogs about juicing fasts and majority of the people gained their weight back. I pray I don’t because I’m finally over this plateau and would really love to heb under 200lbs before our upcoming Jamaica trip. I’ve juiced before but not as a fast. Just as a way to add raw nutrition to my diet but Joe Cross has had me interested in a Reboot for quite some time now. In case anyone is wondering, the juices do fill me up and I’m drinking 3 juices a day with nuts, boiled eggs, fruit, and a few veggie chips for snacks; however, I don’t snack very often. I will have to have a banana and a boiled egg or two tonight because I have H.I.I.T class and I don’t want to pass out. That would be horrific.

Results So Far…

Day 1: -4lbs

Day 2: -1.8lbs

Total: -5.8lbs

I am shooting for a 10-15 pound weight release by the morning of day 10. As always I will let you know how it goes….and this time for real for real because I have no choice but to complete it.

10 Day Green Smoothie Cleanse: Day 1

Day one’s smoothie was pretty good! This was the first time I have ever had a smoothie with water as the liquid base (I normally use apple or orange juice) but it wasn’t bad at all. In addition to three smoothies a day, low sodium tuna, raw hard vegetables (carrots, celery, cucumber, etc), raw nuts, boiled eggs, unsweetened peanut butter, and apples are allowed. I was actually pretty full most of the day; however, I did have a battle in my mind around 3 or 4 o’clock talking myself down from my usual carby snacks such as crackers and anything sweet. I did eat too many nuts today but in not beating myself up because I didn’t verify how many were allowed before eating. It is only supposed to be a handful and not half a bag ๐Ÿ˜ณ. It was a small bag. Now that I know and can correct my mistakes, I’m really looking forward to successfully reaching Day 10! I did not exercise today because I didn’t make it to the gym because of appointments and I was tired when I got home, which is normal during a detox, so I allowed my body today to rest so that I can be ready to shake my boo-tay in Zumba tomorrow ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚. As always I will keep you posted!

10 Day Green Smoothie Cleanse Jumpstart

For the past year and a half or so, I have been watching documentaries on Netflix regarding health and what we should be eating and the benefits of a plant-based diet. After finishing a documentary last night, I ran across the 10 Day Green Smoothie Cleanse by JJ smith and I decided to give it a try. I have nothing to lose but weight and a lot to gain like a healthier body and fabulous skin! I am starting tomorrow with the support of my mother and my cousin. The benefits of this cleanse is a 10-15 pound weight release, detoxification, healthier skin, and more. This definitely won’t be a walk in the park for me mentally or emotionally but I am ready to push through and show myself that I am stronger than I give myself credit for and I am worth it, my health is worth it, and my family is worth it. If you want more information visit the 10 Day Green Smoothie Cleanse Facebook page: https://m.facebook.com/groups/250346851756039?ref=m_notif&notif_t=group_r2j_approved&actorid=1300736080

Countdown

If you are just now tuning in to my blog, I started this blog to share my weight release journey while my husband was deployed. Well, time is dwindling down and I have released 25 pounds, over 20 inches, and lowered my body fat percentage by over 15%. Although I will not reach my goal before “The Big Leap”, I plan to be over halfway there by that time. My new shorterm goal is to release 30 more pounds before “The Big Leap” and although it will be a challenge, it is definitely an obtainable goal. In order to get results I have not gotten I have to push harder and do things I have not done and I am up for the challenge. As always I will keep you posted!

Protein, Protein, & More Protein

When I think of protein, the first thing that comes to my mind is body building. Over the past few years I’ve seen my husband increase his protein when he wanted to gain muscle, so when my trainer told me to increase my protein I was confused. Muscles are nice but I want to lose fat and tone not build muscle. That is when I did some research and found out how important protein is for fat loss. During weight loss, the body burns fat and muscle. When there is more protein present, the body focuses on burning fat. Protein also keeps you fuller longer and repairs muscles as you strength train. These are just a few of the many benefits of having a high protein diet.

In order to increase my protein, I started looking for protein shakes. As I was browsing, I noticed that a lot of the shakes were reviewed as having a horrible taste and I don’t eat anything my taste buds don’t agree with, and that’s when I remembered that I have plant protein on hand by Nutrilite (http://www.amway.com/KelvinRiddle/Shop/Product/Product.aspx/Nutrilite-All-Plant-Protein-Powder?itemno=110415) that I purchased from my very own store. I’ve tried plant protein in just water and although it isn’t the worst thing I’ve ever tasted it definitely isn’t the best. That is when the light bulb went off and I decided to browse Pinterest for recipes for homemade protein shakes. That is when I came across this: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/93731235973212119/

This banana pudding protein shake above is so yummy!!!! I made mine with half almond milk and half water and I left out the cookies and whipped cream. It was just like drinking banana pudding and this Southern Belle loves banana pudding! I highly recommend it. My 2 year old even enjoyed it! I have a strawberry cheesecake recipe that I will try next and I’m looking forward to it. Protein never tasted so good!

Moving Forward

I have been on my weight release (you don’t lose weight because what you lose you will find) journey for four months and have lost a total of 17 pounds. By now I wanted to be at least 50 pounds lighter but everyone’s journey is different. I hired a trainer and I even had 12 sessions of laser-like liposuction, which gave me results but they were pretty minor. I struggle with emotional eating, compulsive overeating and to be honest sometimes just plain ole lack of discipline. The main lesson that I have learned during this journey is that you CANNOT out exercise a bad diet. Believe me I have tried. I have went to the gym and worked my butt off and rewarded myself with crinkle fries from Zaxby’s with Zax sauce (you can’t forget the Zax sauce) and a milkshake. I’ve had cheat weekends full of Pizza Hut pizza and Sonic milkshakes and I’ve even snuck into my Dad’s snack cabinet a time or two. Now that I know that my eating is the problem, I have decided to do something about it. Not to long ago, I met Sedrek “the inner” Trainer. Unlike most trainers, Sedrek is a certified nutritionist and designs custom meal plans for his clients based on foods they like to eat. Sedrek holds you accountable and measures your weekly progress. He is also there for counseling. It is good to know that when I’m having a meltdown and I’m about to pick up that honeybun, I can call him and say, “Hey brother Sed I am having a meltdown over here and I need your encouragement”. After our first conversation, I was shocked to find out that a lot of things that I was eating and thought were healthy were not and that I was overeating a lot of foods that are good for me like nuts but only if I eat the correct amount. I also found out that I wasn’t eating as much as I should be and a lot of foods that I cut out of my diet, I can actually eat! He is known for getting off an average of 5-7 pounds a week and has assured me that through his program he can help this nursing mom lose at least 60 pounds by May. I’m definitely holding him to that because I don’t want to be on the beautiful beaches of Jamaica this summer with a swimsuit cover on. I have a few more sessions with my current trainer and I plan on continuing to work with her once a week for strength training to keep from having loose skin. I’m definitely looking forward to working with Sedrek and saying goodbye to this weight forever!

2015 Reflections

Wow I can’t believe 2015 is concluding already! This has really been an amazing year! I gave birth to a beautiful and healthy baby girl, graduated with my BA in Education, survived the first half of a deployment, and began my fitness and health journey on August 24th. I am definitely looking forward to what 2016 has in store for me as well as my family.

As of yesterday, I am down 17 pounds! I could be salty about not releasing more but I choose not to be. I am happy that I’m not where I started and I’m looking forward to what this journey has to offer me in 2016! Some of my goals include being able to run or jog long distances without stopping, releasing at least 70 more pounds, become more organized, less procrastination, be a better wife and mother, blog more, travel more, worry less, and just enjoy life. Happy New Year! ๐Ÿ™‚
